The people of Pern prospered with Aivas's knowledge, gaining manyThe people of Pern prospered with Aivas's knowledge, gaining many skills that had been lost for so many Turns but when it came to the most important skill on how to defeat Thread forever, disaster struck. A metorite struck the dawn sisters, knocking them from orbit and sent them crashing into the seas, flooding the landing bay with salt water. The other effect of the dawn sisters crash also woke the nearby volcano from its slumber and it erupt with vengence. Spilling its molten contents across the landing bay, as the riders and people who had worked so hard under Aivas's instruction watched with horror as lava flooded the landing bay. The only sounds other than the rumbling of the volcano were the high pitched metallic screech from Aivas as its circuity was melted and buried beneath a thick blanket of molten rock.
Those who had spent time learning under Aivas's instruction wrote on the preservation sheets to keep the knowledge safe from the wear of time to hope what they had learned would never be lost again. But people began to lose hope after all the promises from the weyrs on removing the threat of Thread forever and the Weyrs were removed from favour, leaving many against the Weyrs.
The Weyrs struggled to survive without the holds at the end of the pass and many nearly collapsed under the weight of trying to support themselves. So a good portion of those who had fought against Thread had to quick learn how to become independant and keep the Weyr's food supplies up. The few Holds that still held to the old ways tithed what they could but without the other Holds helping, the help, although received gratefully, was not enough.
The other Weyrs died out, leaving nothing but husks of old memories as many died from starvation and even more from illness. The three Weyrs that survived, Fort, Benden and High Reaches, dwindled in number. These three Weyrs were the only ones that received tithes from the Holds under their protection, yet as time passed the relationship between the Holds and Weyrs soured further still, especially when the Weyrs prepared to take flight for Thread only to find that it had fallen in much thicker chunks than ever before.
Many injuries were substained, and much more fertile cropland was destroyed and the holds became angered that weyrs could not protect them properly. Even though it was brought that if the holds had supported the weyrs in the first place they wouldn't have this problem. But these remarks only soured the relationship further, although the holds tried to supply the remaining weyrs, it was too late as only two weyrs stood against the falling menace of thread and even they're numbers are none existant. As many of the riders tood on the star stones, watching and waiting for the red star to rise, only to find that the red star dominated the skies casting its red light onto the planet's surface and this seems to have affected the dragons with its raidiation. THe dragons have began to mutate, their colors changing slowly and even messing with the biological make up, as a green dragon took to the sands and produced a small clutch of ten eggs that all hatched and brought about the first of the new colors.
Blacks, Reds, Purples, Silvers, Oranges, yellows and the original colors that seem to have blended together to create something completely different. No one is quite sure how these colors will affect what is happening or even if they're apperance is good sign. Only time will tell, but everyone is on limited time. AS thread has yet to stop falling. Will the thread ever stop falling for more than a few days? Will the weyrs be able to come back from the brink as they have done many times before?
